Stepping out of the comfort zone

Client industry:
Management Consulting

Employee Size:
5,000-10,000

Coachee Situation:

This Management Consulting firm is a challenger to the Big4 and has created a position for itself in the India & Middle East markets over the years. The talent war in the consulting industry prompted the Managing Partner of the firm to develop a personal bond with the Consultants in the formative years and run the organization as a close-knit family. While this deep people orientation bought loyalty it did not translate into greater aspirations for the business nor spark a sense of urgency in execution. The Directors who were the face of the firm had entered a “Comfort Zone” and were happy serving their existing clients more than focusing on newer business development. Some of them also seemed satisfied with their current level within the organization and did not demonstrate any great drive or motivation to move to the next level to become Managing Directors.

Coaching Engagement:

Coaching is the ultimate customization and is a relationship between the coach and the coachee that is indexed on positivity, possibility, and confidentiality. In this cocoon of safety, the coach is able to engage with empathy and spark motivation and thinking that are core to aspiration. The blending of coaching and its alignment to business development allowed the directors to experience the impact of coaching within their respective contexts. It helped them build multiple perspectives to manage themselves better, manage their teams better and collaborate better across peers and critical stakeholders. Ensuring 360-degree feedback also helped in raising the awareness of the coachee to the perceptions that define their reality. Looking at the mirror thus, enabled them to build newer behaviours and habits to influence their network better.

Coachee Results:

Every coachee within the cohort had a significant number of learnings from each coaching session. These learnings were then translated into actions to create habits that drive higher order results. Exceeding their billing commitments, taking on cross-functional projects and building their teams to be better than themselves were some of the key takeaways for these coachees. From the firm’s perspective, excellent feedback from the coachees on the value of the coaching engagement, helped them to identify the next set of coachees who could benefit from these experiences that blended the awareness, appreciation, and application of coaching.
